A great day for charities and community groups!
Sunday 24th September 2017 saw the second Winchester Half Marathon take to the streets! Just like the first year, the sun came out and crowds lined the route to support the athletes. Last year over £45,000 was raised for charity and this time the total has come to over £60,000 with over 90 different charities represented on the day! The Lead National Charity for the event was Macmillan Cancer Support and Team Macmillan runners raised £15,000! This year saw Countess Mountbatten Hospice Charity link up as Lead Local Charity and their runners and volunteers raised £2,000! Their volunteers gathered at the water station in Hursley and made sure all runners received a bottle of water as they raced passed. All groups of 20 volunteers received a ‘thank you’ donation to their club or charity.
Other charities that were represented on the day included, KidsOut, Friends of PICU, Naomi House and The Joe Glover Trust who had a team from Trethowans Solicitors running for them raising over £1,500!
Winchester Half Marathon was honoured to welcome a team of over 30 runners from the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court. Winchester Half was their third half marathon is as many weeks to raise money for the specialist treatment that is provided at the centre for injured servicemen and women. Rumour has it that some members of the team stopped for a quick pint halfway round the course!
We had 300 volunteers at this year’s event and we simply couldn’t organise the race without them. As well as guiding the runners on the route (and giving them a big cheer!) we also need volunteers on water stations, in the baggage hall and handing out those all-important medals at the finish line! This year we had five societies from the University of Winchester join us as marshals and a further five groups that were new to volunteering with us. Runners feedback has been very complimentary regarding the amount of support around the route and the community spirit shown throughout the day. We have been busy visiting the groups to say, ‘Thank you’ and presenting them with the donation cheque! It’s great to hear what the donation is going towards, so far this year it’s been spent on a new club kit, paid for the costumes for a production, bought toiletries for the patients at the hospice, gone towards a Christmas party and been passed on to charity!
