Community Group Run & Marshal at Winchester Half Marathon!
Nick Bell's Story
I ran the race in 2 hrs 11 mins, which I was pleased with, as whilst I have run the Great North Run 6 times now, with a usual time of between 1 hr 40 and 1hr 50 mins, this was my first competitive run for 3 years - and I am now 60years+!
I found it a very tough race with all the hills etc, but very beautiful in terms of scenery and crowd encouragement. It was lovely to be running in my local area.
I was running for Winchester Youth Counselling, a local and relatively young charity (established 15 years) of which I am presently Chair of Trustees, having been involved with it for 6 years.
I raised £550 (£700 with Gift Aid) from family and friends. In addition, I organised 20 marshals from the other Trustees and their family and friends which added another £200 to that total. Those marshals covered the section up St James Lane and Romsey Road and into Sarum Road, the toughest part of the route so it was great to have some people I knew encouraging me on at those points!!
Winchester Youth Counselling is special to me because of the work I do with them, but that in turn is important because of the desperate need in out local community for young people suffering from issues which are going unaddressed by the statutory authority. Although a lot of the problems are not at the very serious end of the scale they are ruining the lives of those young people and their families if left unaddressed.
